about Arctic foundation Not so long ago, our contacts with the unfamiliar and unknown used to take place during holidays, mostly abroad. Now, our neighbours are people with different skin colours and different customs. Many people may have problems getting used to the phenomenon, but at work, in school and in sports they are learning to accept and appreciate these differen- ces. To the artist, the 'other' has always been a challenge. ARCTIC (1995), proceeding from a strong commitment to society, links up with this deve- lopment by stimulating the emergence of 'new' art based on the equality of cultures and artists throughout the world. ARCTIC organises digital workshops in the Netherlands and elsewhere in the world for artists from different cultural backgrounds. The keystone of this course of action is cultural trans- mission, the process of confrontation and mutual mental influence. ARCTIC also organises exhibitions, lectures and symposiums for a wide audience, high- lighting cultural-political and social contexts of contemporary art in cultural transmission. ARCTIC gives precedence to the process itself rather than to the product. Mentalities inter- mingleand clash in an attempt to develop new attitudes to the creation of art. Het begrip culturele transmissie dat door ARCTIC in 1995 werd geïntroduceerd, betreft vooral verandering van de eigenheid van mensen onder invloed van het mondialisering- proces. Onder culturele transmissie in de kunst verstaat ARCTIC het overdrachtsproces tussen onderling verschillende, aan culturele achtergronden gerelateerde, attitudes. Binnen de kunsten heeft dit proces dan ook in eerste instantie betrekking op levens- en werk-houdingen. De mentale en morele grondhouding die ten grondslag kan liggen aan kunst is daarbij belangrijker dan de formele, stilistische of materiële aspecten. Dit proces vindt plaats op regionaal, landelijk en mondiaal niveau. In de praktijk vertaalt ARCTIC cul- turele transmissie door het mogelijkmaken van onderlinge beïnvloeding en confrontatie van kunstenaars met uiteenlopende culturele achtergronden. Van het culturele transmissieproces kan geen effect op korte termijn verwacht worden. In de praktijk van ARCTIC blijkt dat na jaren de invloeden hiervan voelbaar wordt binnen de ontwikkeling van het werk van de individuele kunstenaars.(sinds 2001 komt deze kunst bij ARCTIC tot stand met gebruikmaking van digitale video en fototechnieken) Er wordt ge- streefd naar een integrale en multidisciplinaire werkwijze. |
